A Day Out In York.

So yesterday, I went on a bit of a day trip to York, which is the capital city of Yorkshire, or at least it would be if Sheffield wasn’t  so awesome.

Anyway, the reason we were going to York was to help Joanne move into her new uni digs. I pretty much bummed a ride with my mother, Dave and Rario. The idea was to spend a day in York with Rario because we never get chance to hang out and actually do something interesting. Normally it is just hanging out in my front room playing street fighter or something equally mundane.

So on the way there we had a good laugh at my mum and dave getting lost by trying to follow the Ozzy Osborne voice to get to York. Me and Rario had a good laugh adding new phrases to the directions such as “At the next roundabout, try fucking listening” or “At the next exit, get out and let Dave fucking drive.” Eventually, we got dropped off in york out side the city walls and decided to walk along the wall into town.

After this we made it into town, looked round all the weird shops including a pretty rad comic shop. We also stumbled on the York food festival in the centre of town and Rario enjoyed an ostrich burger like so…

meanwhile I enjoyed a Bockwurst..

The day pretty much followed the same pattern from then on. My mum did buy me some cool chinese paper lanters and some cool bracelets from an awesome chinese shop and we did meet this cool purple man. He painted our mohawks and was a really nice guy.

Anyway that was my day in York. Was really fun and I wanna do something random again soon!

One, Two, Three SLAM!

Recently I have been in a good mood for a change, not really sure why, I still have no money, still work in a fucking call centre and still have zero hobbies, but still I have had a smile on my face.

The things that usually bother me about my life haven’t seemed to matter so much and life generally seems better. I have been listening to a lot of Guttermouth recently and they have certainly helped fuel this good mood I find myself in. They have also reminded me how I used to feel when I was 17 and still restless with the world, back when my attitude was fuck everything and I never cared what people thought. The last few years I seemed to have lost some of that mentality and now I have sorta found it again. I remembered that I don’t really want to fit in and grow up and be boring like everyone else, I like living off the beaten track and the rat race has never been important to me.

I find it quite interesting that music can stir up such traits in myself, the music I listen to seems to be able to dictate how I feel and sometimes how I act. Perhaps it is because I am easily lead or maybe it is because I am so obsessed with music that I am quite willing to live my life by the messages that my iTunes library purveys. Either way, the point I am trying to make is that Guttermouth are fucking awesome, and I am glad I remembered that this week.

Posted: My Sisters New Job

Ok, so today whilst recovering from swine flu I decided to put some of my degree learnings to use and start a project I had been thinking about for a while now. Years ago, when I was still playing in 5FD we started playing with a band called neighbourhood watch from Dronfield. This band is my favorite local band of all time and I have always wanted to have a bash at some of their songs. We once did a split EP together and played loads of shows on the same stage.

Anyway the first effort is up now on my soundclick page. You can find the link in the right hand menu of this blog. There are around 15 other songs I have made in my bedroom all available for free download, so if you like what you hear do not hesitate to download them!

Shun Goku Satsu = Eat 1000 Eggs.

This week I have mostly been playing Street Fighter 4.

seriously, I have been playing lots of SF4 this week in an effort to improve my game play. I have developed a training plan that I use in practice mode for warming up and execution practice. First of all I load up practice mode using akuma then I do the following 6 times, 3 from either side of the opponent.

  • HP > LK Tatsu > HP SRK
  • HP > LK Tatsu > LP SRK xFADCx HP Shaku
  • HK > c.LP > LK Tatsu > HP SRK
  • HK > c.LP > LK Tatsu > LP SRK xFADCx HP Shaku
  • c.LK > c.LP > c.MP > HK Tatsu

This has really started to help my execution on his bread and butters as well as giving me some practice on block strings etc

This week I also managed to nail the True kara demon for the first time and it is awesome. Kara is a japanese term for empty and the technique allows you to disguise the demon in the start up frames of another move. The ones that I use are overhand MP, Crouching MK and HK. I was approaching the inputs all wrong for this move and the way it works is to abuse SF4 input priorities.

The Ultra demon input is LP, LP, <- , LK, HP and to Kara the demon using the over hand MP the input has to go like this:

-> LP + MP , LP + MP, <- LK + HP

Hope this helps!

Fuck Coca-Cola, 7up Free FTW!

Recently, people have been telling me that I look like I have been losing weight. I didn’t really think much of it as I have not been trying consciously to lose weight so I figured they were just been nice. Anyway I decided to put it to the test last week and weigh myself properly. I went to my mums house (as she has some scales) and got weighed. Last time I weighed myself was when I was still living at my mums house and I weight around 25/26 stone and that was around a year ago. My new weight is under 21 stone, meaning I have lost 4+ stone in around a year.

I wish I could tell you that there is some great secret or diet that I tried but the truth of the matter is that I really didn’t try. There are a few underlying factors that could have caused me to loose weight but im not 100%. First of all I stopped drinking Coca-Cola all together, at one point I drunk 2+ Litres of coke per day, every day for probably 10 or more years. Recently I stopped all together and it was surprisingly difficult to kick at first but now I have switched exclusively to diet lemonade and 7up Free.

Since moving out on my own, I don’t seem to eat as much as I did when I was at home, wether this is because the house isn’t full of food or maybe its because I don’t have as much money for food but I don’t go hungry, I just seem not to be hungry as much. I tend to eat 2 meals per day, one in the morning and one in the evening. I still don’t eat particularly healthy and I am still losing weight.

The next step is to keep weight slowly dropping by starting to exercise. I have decided that swimming is probably my best bet to lose weight as it is non contact and pretty relaxing. There is a swimming baths less than 10 minutes from my flat and I just need to get some swimming shorts that fit me so I can start going on my days off.

Swine Flu – sounds like a slang term for a Pig’s Vagina

Last week, 6 people in my team of 13 or so workers had been sent home with swine flu. At this point I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I was bound to get swine flu eventually. In a huge call centre that recycles the air through its air conditioning system meant I had no real chance.

So I am sat at home now, when I should be at work because I have suspected swine flu. I am not even convinced I have swine flu but the woman on the helpline seems to think I have and they have prescribed me some Tamiflu tablets. I don’t feel too bad at the minute, just a little worn out and an occasional fever, I also have a dry cough and have had a bout of sickness and diarrhea.

One good thing has come from getting swine flu, I have spent the last day or so just catching up on films I havent seen in a while including:

  • Slap Shot
  • Balls Of Fury
  • V for Vendetta
  • Phone Booth
  • The Foot Fist Way
  • Star Wars Episode 4 and 5

So all in all Swine Flu ain’t so bad, I think its just the media being dumb as per usual.

Insert Coin 09

So today was the launch of Insert Coin 09 – an arcade game exhibition. Me, Rario, Xoxon and Fil made the trek down to the Northampton Saints stadium for the UK’s first open to public arcade exhibition “Insert Coin 09″ We set of at around 9am and finally got there after a couple of pit stops along the way at 11:45(ish) The drive sucked because I was so tired but the venue was really easy to find which was nice.

After signing in, I decided to have a wander round and have a look at all the arcade games that were there. Some of them were absolute classics such as Tetris, Space Invaders and PACMAN whilst others were new such as Street Fighter 4 and Tekken 6. There were around 100 machines all set to freeplay which meant there was plenty to be playing. In a separate room there was the UK DDR tournament being set up and Guinness world records were there to hand out awards. One of the games there absolutely blew my mind, not because it was brilliant, I just couldn’t understand why it was invented in the first place. It was basically virtual walk the dog and I am being honestly serious. There was a treadmill, and a dog lead connected to a virtual dog on the screen and the aim of the game was to walk the dog I think, it was mainly in Japanese so I am not too sure about it.

We spent most of the day in the electronic dojo where all the fighting games were, including 8 Street Fighter 4 cabs that were set up for casual games. The cabs were not in the best of condition, some sticks were a little off and one cab LP button didn’t work. and the games were blatantly running on a PC of some sort but it was cool none the less. I did encounter a problem on the old temple stage where the screen was so dark, Akuma actually disappeared and all I could see were his eyes so I had to watch my opponents screen nearly 4 cabs away. There was also loads of older Street Fighter games from alpha to 3rd strike as well as a load of other fighting games I had never really seen before.

Later in the day we entered into a 60 man SF4 tournament. I lost 2-0 to some Bison  player who scissored me to death, whilst Rario lost to a very impressive Balrog player. Coxon managed to win his first game before getting beaten by a decent Honda player. The thing we all noticed was how the timing was slightly different to the console version which made links harder to hit. After all busting out we decided to head off home.

All in all it was a good day but to be honest I was expecting a little more from Insert Coin 09. Maybe Insert Coin 10 will be better?

The 10 Songs That Changed My Life

Music is a vital factor in my life, always has been and probably always be. Music is not something that you idly listen to then dispose of, music is something that should engage you, make you think and can even give you a sense of identity. I know this is definitely case for me, as without the music I love, I probably would not be the person I am today. Here is a list of 10 songs that I consider to have changed my life.

Track 1: All I Want – The Offspring

I first heard this track as the bonus track on the first punk single I ever bought. At the time, I was around 13 years old and I was still into my Ibiza club land style music and I went to Worksop town with my friend and I bought “Pretty Fly For A White Guy” on single. The CD had a live version of “All I Want” and I remember thinking that this was nothing like anything I had ever heard before, it was literally mind blowing to me. It was so fast and full of energy, and more importantly was full of attitude. This really got me interested in punk rock for the very first time. I also remember hearing this track lots when I used to play Crazy Taxi on my Dreamcast, Which contrary to public belief is in fact the best game ever.

Track 2: All The Small Things – Blink 182

This one now is a little embarrassing but at the time this song changed everything for me. it was probably a few months after I first heard “All I Want” and I saw this song on TV. I remember the video really amusing me and the song really stuck in my head. This song sucks, but it did lead to me buying the album and getting into punk rock properly for the first time, even if it was only pop punk.

Track 3: Leave It Alone – NOFX

This was the first time I was introduced to my favourite band NOFX. This was back in the days when I would spend my days watching MTV2 and trying to find some bands to check out. As NOFX hate MTV or whatever they never had any videos on TV apart from this one. I first saw this on an episode called Blink-182 choose and they chose this first. It literally blew me away. It was so fast and raw, the video was so cool and it opened my eyes to the fact not all music has to be about girls, in fact, the good songs have nothing to do with girls.

Track 4: Anti-Manifesto – Propagandhi

This was pretty much my first taste of politically aware music. i first heard this track on the original Fat Wreck compilations called Fat Music For Fat People on the way to a green day gig. I had never really heard any guitars playing thrash stuff like this before and it pretty much gave me an erection. It made me wanna learn to palm mute like a bastard and was quite a catalyst for my own song writing change. The lyrics in this song are so good it is untrue, it really makes a lot of sense to me and it lead me on to find this awesome band and others like them.

Track 5: Cooler Than You – Diesel Boy

I like this song, mainly because it almost perfectly describes my life. The opening lyrics are “I’m 24, I Don’t own a tie, I don’t have a job and I love to get high” As you can see these lyrics are pretty close to my actual life other than the job bit but I used to be on the dole so that counts. This song is the Lombre brothers anthem as Liam introduced me to this song and we constantly use it to abuse Xoxon as we are in fact cooler than him. Didn’t really change anything in my life but it certainly helped me and Liam pass quite a few hours.

Track 6: All My Best Friends Are Metalheads – Less Than Jake

This song was another gem that I discovered during my MTV2 days, and is pretty much the song that got me interested in Ska-punk as a genre. I had never really heard horns being used in fast music before this, and I realised that I quite liked it. For many years I was pretty obsessed with ska-punk even to the point it inspired my web handle which I am still using to this day and this song is pretty much responsible, well this and beer by Reel Big Fish which I heard for the first time on BASEketball.

Track 7: What’s Left Of The Flag – Flogging Molly

The lyrics of this song are absolutely incredible. If you actually listen to the words they are so thoughtful and deep but it remains such an awesome song which is quite difficult. The song is talking about the death of a father and as I lost my dad years ago it really strikes a chord so to speak. Flogging Molly opened with this when I saw them live in Leeds and it was simply sensational. I have already decided that I am going to have this song played at my funeral.

Track 8: Chance of a Lunchtime – Captain Everything

This track was the first real time I learned that UK bands are actually good. When I first heard this song I had never heard a song being played so fast. The drumming literally blew me away and it had all the elements of pop punk music that got me into the the genre in the first place. I had the pleasure of seeing this song live when I got to share the same stage as them at a gig in Dronfield.

Track 9: Ska Wars – Capdown

This song was the first ever capdown song I heard and got me into Ska-core for the first time. I especially love this song because I got to see it being performed live at a tiny basement show before most people knew who capdown were. The room was almost empty but the feeling I got from this song in particular was incredible. I still love this song despite i don’t really know all the words to this song, but in my defense, they are quite hard to understand.

Track 10: The Science of Myth – Screeching Weasel

Even though I am pretty much anti-religion this song puts things in a context that made a lot of sense to me. It looks at the argument from both a faith and a scientific standpoint. The line I like the most is “Science and religion
are not mutually exclusive, in fact for better understanding we take the facts of science and apply them, and if both factors keep evolving, then we continue getting information, but closing off possibilities makes it hard to see the bigger picture.” Even though I am not religious it really me think about why people do believe so I can not be such a dick when I am round them.
